Back in the nineties, holiday style was all about the puffiest sleeve and velvet vibes. Well, after NYFW Fall 2014, I’m happy to announce this trend is back in full swing. As a child, I begged each Christmas that my dress would be a ‘velvet spinny dress’ where I could twirl around the living room for hours. After doing some review of holiday lookbooks from our favorite fashion mags, I noticed a trend: velvet is here for the holidays.
That so-called ‘spinny’ dress I begged for decades ago would most certainly be called a skater style. If you caught my post last week about Thanksgiving style, you know this cut is one of the most flattering as well as comfortable for all your holiday affairs. Many fashion lines are featuring a velvet skater style dress in their look books so that means ‘spinny’ dresses for all! Velvet really comes in two forms: crushed and plush. The middle dress is a crushed, the black and white is a plush and burgundy would be a cross between the two. The crushed has the benefit of being lighter but the plush just has a regal look about it which makes this style my favorite. What’re your preferences for velvety styles?
In terms of the velvet trend, it seems to be reaching far beyond just this one style of dress. Topshop is featuring a ‘Velvet Playsuit‘ which would be the perfect unique holiday garb. It’d pair perfectly with a structured blazer and some heels for your holiday party! Also in my research, I came by this pair of velvet booties from ModCloth which made me just swoon. They’re black velvet with sexy cut outs and ties. These could be worn with cropped pants, boyfriend jeans, a nice dress, or essentially anything in my closet. ModCloth never dissappoints with their trendy pieces, dear readers.
If you’re on the look out for something different to wear to your holiday affairs, dear readers, I’d say reach for something velvety. I’ll be scavenging the racks of Goodwill to find something a little nineties inspired to wear to my parties. Will you?
